Exhibition Theme and Reasoning

Often in the life of an African American there are stories told about their ancestors, and the way they have struggled, but also how they have persevered.  At times stories are told of the women who were the saviors at home, but always is a story of how a man has led the way and often shouldered the burden of the entire family. It is with this thought that this exhibition has been curated, to show the reality that men of African descent have been pioneers. From slavery to freedom, from reconstruction through the Great Depression, beyond Jim Crow, race riots, and rights being granted, to finally a day when justice seems to be on the horizon black men have led.  In determining how I wanted to develop my exhibition, I initially thought of women like my mother, grandmother, aunts, and cousins, how I could pay homage to them.  Then I thought of my father who is often the one who I turn to when I am most in need, who is the one I can always laugh the easiest with and who, wants the best for me.
